Becoming a GP in the Netherlands

Becoming a GP in the Netherlands involves a national recruitment procedure. This procedure takes place twice a year. Before applying, you must ensure you are eligible to participate in the GP training programme. This page explains these eligibility requirements and how to submit your application.

Recruitment timeline

There are two rounds of recruitment each year: June-July and December-January.

Eligibility requirements

There are strict eligibility requirements when applying for the GP training programme:

  • You need to have a certified diploma as a licensed physician, obtained no later than 8 weeks before the start of the programme
  • You need to have a valid driver’s license, obtained no later than 12 weeks before the start of the programme
  • You need to have a valid BIG registration
  • You need to be fluent in the Dutch language
